Charles Boston was a carpenter and joiner working in the mid 1800s.

The drawing shows a detailed, constructional drawing for a staircase and is part of a larger collection of joinery drawings for a project in France. The original was made with pen, ink, grey and pink wash on wove paper.

We love the elegant, sweeping shape of this staircase and how, in the drawing, it seems to float in space, lending both the staircase and the drawing a contemporary quality.
