From a series of illustrated letters sent by the Italian architect Gio Ponti to his publisher Daria Guarnati in the 1960s.
Giovanni "Gio" Ponti (1891-1979) was an Italian architect and designer. Over his sixty year career, Ponti designed and built over a hundred buildings such as the Pirelli Tower in Milan and Villa Planchart in Caracas and also turned his hand to furniture, decorative art, and industrial design. From the Superleggera chairs through to thousands of cabinets, lamps, ceramics and glassware, Ponti was a relentlessly inventive visionary who pushed the boundaries of both Italian and global design.
In this letter, the words form an arrangement of flowers in a vase. There is a draughtsman’s precision here in the quickly sketched, yet perfect, rendering of the vase, and the playful forms encapsulate the midcentury modern design he was famous for.
